Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA)
The Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) seeks an enthusiastic and resourceful full-time Associate to support center-wide communications and events. A critical member of the Operations team, you will work across the Center to “translate” research into lessons for policymakers around the world, the media and the general public, as well as manage high-profile dissemination events.
About CEGA CEGA is a West Coast hub for research on global development, with a network of 120+ academic researchers extending across the University of California, Stanford University, and the University of Washington. Our faculty affiliates design and test solutions for the problems of poverty, generating actionable evidence for policy-makers in low- and middle-income countries. Through careful matchmaking, competitive grant-making, and research dissemination activities, CEGA ensures that the scientific evidence we produce improves the lives of people living in poverty.
CEGA is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion – please read our values statement here: https://cega.berkeley.edu/values/
Position Details We are looking for a self-directed and pro-active events manager and communications lead who can confidently manage logistics and communications for local, international and virtual convenings. As Events & Communications Associate, you will be the Center’s primary resource and point person for event planning, contracting, on-site coordination and staffing, videography/media, communications, and follow-up. You will further help develop and streamline internal processes related to events and external communications. Your contributions will amplify CEGA’s work and allow us to deepen relationships with researchers, policy-makers and other important stakeholders.
You should have events management expertise. Ideally you are also familiar with international development and/or social science research, with the ability to comprehend and clearly explain academic work for a public audience. You will work with staff, students, and faculty across the Center to develop multimedia content, disseminate through social media, monitor and advance press coverage, and manage website operations. You demonstrate expertise communicating and connecting with a variety of actors—from vendors and the media, to policymakers and researchers.
This is a full-time 1 year contract position with the possibility of extension. A two-year commitment is desired for this position.
Responsibilities Events Management (45%): Lead logistical support for all CEGA events including venue, catering, and speaker/participant travel, and advise on communications and outreach strategy. Advise colleagues on the design and management of timelines, budgets, print materials, volunteers, and communication strategies, with input from key stakeholders. Oversee event logistics with “tone” in mind. Establish and maintain event webpages, coordinate video and other media capture, and manage press and social media coverage. Process travel and purchase reimbursements, ensure that vendor invoices are paid, and take responsibility for other post-event administrative activities, including process documentation and reporting.
Content Development & Management (35%): Own process management in support of all Center communications efforts and contribute to overarching strategy. Manage the production of the center’s monthly public newsletter, bulletins, and blog. Solicit, edit, and compile materials from staff to produce professional outputs on short timelines. Assist in the development and dissemination of multimedia content and print collateral for our programs and events. Manage CEGA’s WordPress website by keeping the homepage current, clear, and engaging and collaborate with colleagues on upgrades. Build up and maintain CEGA’s photo and media library. Manage CEGA’s Working Paper Series, which involves soliciting and posting new content from staff and faculty affiliates, as well as a communications intern.
Media Monitoring and Engagement (15%): Create and share a variety of content through CEGA’s Twitter and Facebook accounts, blogs, and other outlets. Identify key opportunities for CEGA to respond to breaking news or hot topics. Analyze, report and respond to social media activity and trends. Track media mentions of CEGA and provide media reports to program staff. Track web analytics and report metrics to better understand our user groups and audience.
Press Strategy (5%): Identify contacts for media outlets and proactively maintain contact lists in Salesforce. Organize periodic updates with customized content for priority groups. Circulate Center press releases, briefings, op-eds and other media materials and “pitch” to journalists as appropriate.
Qualifications Education: You hold a bachelor’s (possibly a master’s) preferably in communications, marketing, public relations, or other related field. Training or understanding of economics, social policy, and impact evaluation is highly preferred.
Experience: You have 2-3 years of relevant work experience.
Skills: You know how to keep a high-level event running smoothly by planning in advance, responding to last minute requests, making guests and participants feel welcome, and helping volunteers do their best work. You can connect and relate to a variety of audiences. You are comfortable working in or learning computer applications, including Google Suite, Salesforce, WordPress, and particularly Zoom. You have an eye for design and style, both in web and in print. Experience with In-Design and other design programs is a plus.
Communication: You are detail-oriented and have advanced writing skills with ability to compose thoughtful, well-crafted, and on-message communications. You are adept at “translating” research into lessons for policymakers and the general public, and skillfully tailor your communications for distinct audiences. You demonstrate professionalism and discretion, and exhibit good judgment when sharing information publicly.
Organization: You are a strategic thinker. You can handle multiple projects at once, meet deadlines, and effectively manage your time with little direct supervision. You have the ability to anticipate and solve problems and independently investigate solutions to challenges. Experience managing events and strong organization skills are required.
Cultural competencies: You are comfortable and adept at working in a diverse and multicultural work environment, with colleagues, partners and policymakers from around the world. You display cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality, and age sensitivity and adaptability. Everything you’ll do relies on inputs from peers and partners!
Attitude: You love learning. You are passionate about international development policy and the rigorous research that informs it. You are agile, adaptable, self-motivated, hard-working, and collaborative. You remain cool and collected in the face of uncertainty.
