Who you are:
Responsible for the overall vision and mission of THL UK, the successful candidate will be passionate and knowledgeable about our mission of ending the abuse of animals raised for food, in order to strategically lead our programs. Experience in corporate campaigning and/or political campaigning is highly desirable.
- You have a strong ability to conceptualise strategic initiatives to further THL UK’s mission, making sure our day-to-day activities support those initiatives.

Reporting to the Chairperson of the Board, the Managing Director oversees a number of areas:
- Collaborates with the board of trustees (BOT) and Chairperson of the Board and the Leadership Team to create actionable goals for the team and creates clear, ambitious plans for achieving those goals. Working with the Leadership Team and the BOT set the annual budget and forecast fundraising priorities for the future.
- Acts as a public face of the organisation in the UK through speaking events, the media and through THL publications.
- Build and strengthen collaborative relationships with other animal protection groups.
- Fosters a culture of equity and inclusiveness.
- Oversees the program work in the UK (and other relevant EU programs). This will also involve working closely with the Open Wing Alliance and THL US’ Executive team.
- Provide the board with regular updates on program advancement at board meetings, which are held every quarter.
Development and Financial Management:
- Works with the Chairperson of the Board and Head of Development to plan and fundraise for expansion in the UK through major donor meetings. This will include providing regular updates and communications to donors who have offered earmarked support for UK expansion.
- Work with staff and the BOT to prepare a comprehensive budget (currently £1.1 million and likely to grow to over £2 million in the next 2 years).
- Manage charity documents and ensure filing in a timely manner.
- Maintain charitable status, ensuring all charity laws are followed.
- Approve expenditures within the authority delegated by the BOT.
- Supports the recruitment and interview process for new hires in the UK in collaboration with the Operations department.
- Leads and supports the application and implementation of new policies and procedures.
- Works with the Operations department, Leadership Team and pro-bono outside counsel to reduce risks created by our programs.
- Ensures scientific credibility.
- Manages and leads the team to achieve agreed objectives and to encourage the professional development of individual team members.
- Sets/clarifies job expectations and provides regular feedback & guidance.
- Supports teams in the development of their campaigning strategies.
- Manages Time Off requests from direct line managed staff.
- Signs off expenses of direct line managed staff.
Leadership: Has a clear, strategic vision for the department and rallies the team toward realising that vision. Balances and coordinates the interests of the team and other departments. Leads with integrity and mutual respect, and inspires trust and confidence with a wide range of people representing various backgrounds and levels of experience. Believes firmly in promoting a healthy work culture, leading by example and prioritises equity and inclusion.
Thought Leadership: An informed opinion leader on the mission of THL and outcomes we’re seeking. You are the go to person for animal welfare and what our work means in the context of reducing suffering.
Strategic Thinking: Looks at consequences, implications, interdependencies, and indirect effects, all in both the short and longer term. Looks beyond the immediate goal or issue and with the greater context, not just the content of the moment. Is able to think and act creatively in difficult situations.
Management: Builds a team of high-performing staff members, appropriately structures jobs so that staff members can succeed, develops and motivates staff members, and acts from the perspective of an organisational leader that empowers their team.
Tenacity: The ability to display confidence and relentlessness, especially when faced with confrontational or particularly difficult situations and interactions.
Decision Making: An active listener with the ability to critically think and evaluate. Making key decisions when needed and in collaboration with others. You can make quick and calculated thinking and decision-making in both high-pressure situations and broader strategy discussions.
Problem Solver: Identifies issues, effectively structures problems, analyses information to produce insights and generates wise, actionable recommendations. A forward-looking thinker who anticipates the needs of the organisation and board.
